LEGACY

Our willingness to share our journey is an invitation to experience, an opportunity to enjoy and a warm welcome to this special place we call home.

Through the restorative power of nature, the harmonious management of land with wildlife and the commitment to sustainable investments, we are optimistic for a future that can strike a balance between business and environmental legacy. Whilst respecting tradition and heritage, we work to carve a future through diversification, adaptation and an eagerness for improvement.

Land

With conservation at our heart, Barwhillanty Estate adopts an integrated approach to land management; striking the balance between profitability and environmental impact. Decision making is holistic across forestry, farming, and game management.

The landscape is carefully cultivated to support a linked mosaic of habitats to benefit a wide variety of wildlife species. Our beautiful grazing flock of friendly sheep and our herd of majestic red deer are supported with energy rich fodder whilst our game birds are provided with varied habitat for foraging, winter and nesting.

These livestock and game bird populations are managed harmoniously to allow wild bird and invertebrate populations to flourish through creation and maintenance of wetland areas. Historic dykes and established hedges are maintained to provide an aesthetic, natural framework for our farming fields.

Trees

Our woodlands are a mixture of conifer and mixed broadleaves. The predominant high-yielding Sitka spruce, our main commercial species, is intertwined with areas of attractive Douglas fir, Scots pine, Norway spruce.

Punctuated alongside these magnificent masses of imposing conifers, the landscape is softened with a collection of mixed broadleaves; from the mighty oak to the graceful willow. Through this forest restructuring, together with sky lighting and thinning for our game birds, we create habitat corridors that increase wildlife connectivity to support many species and allow for their long term resilience.

Wetlands also exist to increase biodiversity and mitigate against forest fire. Sustainable long term management is our objective; meeting high standards of landscape design, enhancing biodiversity and providing economic timber for the Estate, which in turn is processed into numerous renewable products.

Productive planting delivers an array of additional benefits from combating global warming to reducing flood risk, from improving recreational access to supporting thousands of jobs in rural employment.

Carbon Neutral

We take our responsibility to our environment seriously and strive to be an environmentally sustainable estate. Globally, the demand for forest products are set to double by 2050 and as it stands, the UK is the second biggest importer of forest products in the world due to having only 13% forest cover.

Through monitoring our carbon footprint, we strive to further reduce our carbon impact in our farming operations by adopting various mitigation measures. Working together with Scottish Woodlands, we share a common passion for planting and creating forest products that lock up carbon and help balance the carbon cycle. We want to be part of the journey towards achieving a carbon neutral Britain.

We aspire to create efficient land use that chimes with our mission.
